What a leaf
Posted by Sean Ryan August 11, 2004

This photograph was taken at the Monte Verde Butterfly garden. This leaf was interesting to say the least. There are many theories as to why the leafs grow with gaps inside of their leaves. One is that leaf cutter ants would be less likely to attack them. Another is that by leaving gaps in the leaves sunlight would be able to get to the lower leaves from the same plant. Another theory is that it allows the plants to remain light while climbing up trees, as well as allow air currents to pass through the gaps so the plant is not pulled at by the wind. No matter the reason, or maybe reasons this plant has an asthetic value all of its own.
