Puffer Fish
Posted by Sean Ryan March 18, 2005

This photo was taken on the beach of Cabo Blanco. On this day we were scavenging for interesting organisms in the intertidal zone. We found many creatures but this guy was by far the largest. It's a puffer fish (blow fish), and they can be found hiding in small shallows of water, when the tide has retreated. They camouflage quite well, but if you look carefully, and in a large enough area you can probably find one. If you look closely (in this photo) you can see its beak like teeth which are used to feed on coral and other shelled orginisms. They can also secrete poison through their skin so you may want to leave picking them up to a profesional (like Diana in this picture). Don't worry as long as you wash of your hands you'll be o.k., so don't be afraid to touch the fish with biologist approval.
