Like most organims, being able to avoid being eaten is on the high priority list. What better way to avoid a predator than to blend in to your enviroment. Insects are an organism that have mastered this strategy through millions of years of evolution. Natural selection plays a significant role in this process. The more an insect blends in, or in this case looks like a leaf, the less likely it is to be eaten. Therefore it is more likely to reproduce and pass on it's genes. Over a long peroid of time this process refines an organisms appearance and if changes are drastic enough can possibly lead to a new species. Take into mind that if this insect were to live in the desert it would not fare as well (or at all). Habitat changes affect which individual organism, or collective group is going to be the best fit for their enviroment.
